Three-quarter vs double: the size difference

In Sealy South Africa's size guide, a standard three-quarter mattress measures 107 cm wide by 188 cm long. A standard double measures 137 cm by 188 cm [1]. The double is therefore 30 cm wider, while both standard sizes have the same 188 cm length. Dial-a-Bed gives the same standard measurements on its size pages [2] [3].

The extra width can make a double more comfortable for one person who wants room to move, but a double can be a squeeze for two adults. Neither size is automatically the better mattress: the choice depends on sleepers, available floor area, budget and the specific mattress construction. Extra-length versions are 200 cm long, so confirm the length as well as the width before ordering [1] [3].

Which size fits the room?

A three-quarter footprint uses 0.30 m less width than a double. That difference can help in a guest room or smaller bedroom, especially where a door, cupboard or drawers compete for space. Sealy suggests allowing about 75–90 cm of clearance or more on two or three sides as an ideal planning guide, and recommends marking the dimensions on the floor [1]. Treat this as planning guidance rather than a universal rule.

Measure the usable room and the bed base separately. Frames can be larger than the mattress, and you also need to check walking routes, door swings, drawers and the route for rotating the mattress into the room. The base and fitted linen must match the selected size and length.

A like-for-like price check

The Dial-a-Bed catalogues viewed on 3 November 2026 listed the Sealy Crawford Firm standard-length mattress at R3,399 in three-quarter and R4,199 in double [2] [3]. Both entries identify the named Crawford Firm variant, standard length and mattress-only product, so the displayed promotional prices were comparable on that check. The double was R800 more.

This is not a market average or a promise that the prices remain available. It excludes bases, sets, delivery and finance terms, and it does not establish that every double costs R800 more than its three-quarter counterpart. Before buying, recheck the exact model, width, length, product type and current price on the retailer page.
