Compare the model, not the brand name
Simmons and Serta are ranges, not single constructions. The Bed Centre describes its Simmons Masterpiece Luxury Firm Mattress with Beautyrest NxG Pocketed Coil technology, memory foam, reinforced edges and no-flip construction [2]. That description belongs to the Masterpiece model; it should not be applied to every Simmons mattress. HiFi Corp describes the Serta Nottingham as a plush, flip-free mattress with a foam-encased pocket-coil system and gel-infused memory foam [3]. Serta’s own South African site lists several support architectures, including Pocket Coil, Miracoil, Power Pocket and Best of Both, and separates feel labels such as firm, medium and plush from the support system [4].
Sizes and prices need a strict scope check
Sleep Zone’s Simmons category currently shows a Select Firm Queen Mattress at R12,999, a Select Medium Queen Mattress at R17,999 and a Select Firm Queen XL Set at R16,299 [1]. The first two are presented as mattress listings and the third as a set. The page also gives its standard queen mattress size as 152 cm wide by 188 cm long [1].
What the evidence does—and does not—show
HiFi Corp lists the Serta Nottingham as a 152 cm Queen Extra Length mattress at R10,999 cash [3]. Its recommendation to buy a full set does not make a base part of the listed mattress price. Because the Serta listing is extra length and the Simmons category’s queen convention is 152 × 188 cm, the checked pages do not establish the same length, construction or retailer scope. The rand figures are useful listing snapshots, not a fair price ranking.
- Match mattress-only with mattress-only; exclude the Simmons Queen XL Set from a mattress comparison.
- Confirm the selected variant’s width and length, not just the product title or a from-price.
- Compare firmness only after checking the support core and comfort layers; a firm label is not proof of superior quality or medical suitability.
- Recheck the retailer’s live price, stock, delivery and warranty terms before ordering.
