Compare a model, not a brand label
Sealy and Simmons each appear in several South African listings, so neither brand should be treated as one construction or one comfort level. The Mattress Warehouse page identifies Sealy ranges such as Posturepedic, Hybrid, Crown Jewel, Pocket Systems, Posture Premier and Optimum. Sleep Zone’s Simmons category includes Select Firm, Select Medium and Harmony Luxe products, as well as mattress and bed-set listings [4]. Those range names are starting points, not proof that two models have equivalent springs, foams or feel.
One concrete example is Sealy Posturepedic Pulse. The checked product page describes it as a medium comfort mattress with a Bonnell spring system, StayTrue pressure-relieving foams, a double-offset spring system and reinforced edge support. It lists a 135 kg weight limit, a one-year guarantee and a 10-year service warranty [2]. The Simmons Select Firm Queen page describes motion isolation and head-to-toe support, and labels the model firm; those are retailer/product-page claims, not independent test results [3].
Match the exact size and length
Sealy’s South African size guide lists Queen as 1,520 mm wide by 1,880 mm long, with extra length of 2,000 mm available on request [1]. The Pulse page separately lists standard and XL choices and gives its standard Queen as 152 cm × 188 cm and extra-length Queen as 152 cm × 200 cm [2].
The Simmons Select Firm Queen listing offers 152 cm × 190 cm and 152 cm × 200 cm options [3]. Therefore, a Queen label alone does not establish a like-for-like match: 188 cm, 190 cm and 200 cm are different lengths. Confirm the selected dimensions in the product selector, and check that both offers are mattress-only or both are sets before comparing them.
- Record the full model name and firmness or comfort label.
- Match width and length in centimetres, including XL or extra-length status.
- Compare mattress-only with mattress-only, or set with set; record delivery, trial and warranty terms separately.
- Save the retailer, selected variant and date checked because promotions and stock can change.
Why this guide gives no price winner
The opened pages display prices or price ranges, but they do not establish one same-size, same-length, same-scope Sealy and Simmons pair with a confirmed cash total. Some category cards cover multiple variants, and a displayed product price is not enough to prove which selector state or scope it represents [2] [3] [4]. No like-for-like price verdict is therefore established here.
For a reliable ZAR comparison, capture the exact selected variant on each product page, including dimensions and whether a base is included. Then compare the delivered cash totals on the same date. Until those fields match, the useful conclusion is about specifications and fit, not which brand is cheaper or better.
