Support layers are the deep components of a mattress that bear most of the sleeper’s weight. They sit beneath comfort foams or quilted tops and form the mattress’s structural foundation. Their role is not to create the initial soft or plush feel but to limit excessive sinking, distribute load and give the surface materials something stable to work with.

Common support materials

Two broad approaches appear in support layers: coil systems and dense foam cores. Hybrid mattresses combine a coil core with foam transition or base layers for mixed performance.
