Standard South African dimensions

Compare the footprint before comparing mattress labels. A standard South African double is 137 cm wide by 188 cm long, while a standard queen is 152 cm by 188 cm [1]. Sealy publishes the same measurements as 1,370 mm x 1,880 mm and 1,520 mm x 1,880 mm [2]. The queen is therefore 15 cm wider; standard length is the same. Extra-length versions can be 200 cm, so confirm the selected mattress and compatible base before ordering [1] [2].

Which size fits the room?

The mattress footprint is only part of the layout. A double covers about 2.58 m² and a queen about 2.89 m² before the frame; the queen uses roughly 0.31 m² more floor area, almost all of it in width. Sealy recommends about 75–90 cm of clearance or more on two or three sides for walking, doors, drawers and turning the mattress, and suggests marking the dimensions on the floor [2]. Tape both rectangles, then add the frame and check the route through doors. A double can make sense in a tighter room or for one sleeper. A queen gives two sleepers 15 cm more shared width, but the better choice depends on the whole room and how the bed will be used [1] [2].

A like-for-like price example

Mr Mattress’ collection pages checked on 3 November 2026 explicitly list its Revive Memory Foam as mattress only at R6,299 for Double and R7,199 for Queen [3] [4]. Both listings are the same model family and standard 188 cm length, making the published difference R900. This is a retailer-specific example, not a market-wide verdict. Do not use the pages’ separate “from” prices, a base set, an extra-length option or a different model as a substitute. Prices and stock can change, so reselect Double or Queen, Mattress Only and Standard Length on the live product page before buying.
